Anders Behring Breivik's manifesto "2083 - A European Declaration of Independence" is rather sick. I wouldn't say clinically sick, not "out of this world, impossible to follow word by word-"sick. It is indeed possible to read and formally understand it, word by word and paragraph by paragraph. However, it's the mix of lifestyle advices, tactical instructions, formalism and terrorism that's kind of sick. Hereby some quotes from "2083" to illustrate this.
1. LifestyleTake a time out, make your favourite smoothie, work out or check the newest DVD of your favourite sjanger [sic, correct word is genre], or whatever cheers you up! It’s important to enjoy life even if we work with thankless tasks. [p 1412]
This is from Breivik's auto interview at the end. On the question, "Are you a social type with a positive attitude?" he answers that of course he can be social but he works best alone. However, during periods of hard labour you have to be able to enjoy yourself, hence the lifestyle advice.
2. Tactics[How to stop a car and telling the driver to hand over the vehicle:] If he refuses, insist and threaten with criminal charges for obstructing a criminal investigation and offer him your service number... If he still refuses threaten with shooting him if he does not vacate his car within 10 seconds. If he still refuses, shoot him in the head. [p 957]
This problem is discussed in the operative section of "2083": the getaway car. Don't break into a car, no, donned in police uniform the hitman shall stop a car and convince the driver to hand it over. This is an example of Breivik's warlike mind. He considers himself a soldier in a war, a war that started in 1999 when Serbia got bombed by NATO when it (Serbia) tried to expell its muslim population. Breivik fights against The Powers That Be in this war, Europe's multiculti regimes, therefore his total deliberation and ruthlessness. It reminds you of jihadists and Baader Meinhof: to operate like soldiers in a war in a de facto peceful environment. This mindset gives them their upper hand in situations like these.
3. Marketing StrategyThe... military operation is a sub-task as well as it is a marketing method for the distribution of this compendium...[p 1410] If I fail to generate the specified amount I will move forward with the operation, in order to market the compendium that way. [p 1416]
What Brevik means is that he wanted his manifesto to be read, therefore he killed 77 people.
4. Uniform CodeThe uniform jacket is an elaborate uniform worn for formal or ceremonial occasions... The Knights Templar has adopted the stripped version of the USMC dress blues jacket due to the classic design and availability. When you order the jacket, you strip it of accoutrements (buttons and insignias) and apply your own. [p 1098]
Being interested in
uniforms as such isn't sick. Maybe not even to have a special dress uniform for your chevalric order. But a mass murderer giving lots of room in his manifesto for medals and uniforms of the Knights Templar - well that's weird.
5. TerrorThe Knights Templar are currently unwilling to detonate a nuclear warhead above 0,1-0,2 kt device as the civilian causalities would be too great. [p 1030]
What's he saying? The knights don't want to blast off an all too big nuke? Decent eh...? - But you get my drift: if you as a terrorist ponder using nukes then you're s-i-c-k. I brought the quote along only to illustrate Breivik's frivolous way of discussing matters of life and death.
CodaBreivik's "2083" offers some insights into a criminal mind. Of course it's long and digressive but I guess it's the manifesto writer's right to digress. It's not a novel, not an academic paper. It spans the genres from anarchist cookbook to sermon, from autobiography to world history. Those who dismiss it out of hand are simpletons. It's a manifesto, no novel you can write off simply because of its style or atmosphere. "2083" is a character piece, a journey to the heart of darkness and a radical analysis in one. Sick, yes, interesting - yes!
